Star2Billing & Open Source
Over the last few years, we have seen some spectacular products coming out of the open source community, and indeed most of the internet runs on open source software. The most well known of these is the acronym “LAMP”, Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, on which many of The World’s internet sites are run.
Star2Billing S.L. was officially set up in November 2009 to provide a revenue stream to help develop A2Billing, one of the most popular Open Source Switch and Billing systems available. We aim to remove the common perception that open source products, and A2Billing in particular, lack formal support, by providing consultancy, installation services and training to the highest possible standards, while still catering for those, like us, who believe in the concept of open source software.
A2Billing software is free in both senses of the word, in that the license allows the application to be modified under the terms of the AGPL, and we give A2Billing away free of charge, and therefore has been downloaded and installed on many thousands of servers, generating revenue for their owners, by means of billing telephone calls. This gives us a huge installed user base who will tell us if we have made a mistake, and in some cases, even fix the error or the bug and pass the fix back to us.
Because the source code is clearly visible, as are all the changes made to the underlying code, it is possible to audit the system for both functionality and security.
The application A2Billing, will always be free and open source to the community, and indeed the version we use for our commercial installs is exactly the same and freely available from our Community Site , because we value the help and support we, and our users get from the community, and we firmly believe that we get a better product because of it.
